Kin Shop

I was excited and surprised when I landed a reservation for four at Kin Shop on a recent Saturday night; I was even more surprised when we arrived and the restaurant was practically empty.  But don't fret, those unoccupied tables quickly dissipated, and by the end of our meal, the restaurant was abuzz with enthusiastic diners shelling out a lot of money for Thai food. Despite the steep prices and smallish portions, the food is excellent. Kin Shop is co-owned by American chef Harold Dieterle and features contemporary Thai food in the trendy West Village.

The service at Kin Shop was helpful and attentive. Our waiter walked us through the menu and recommended some pretty fantastic dishes:

We raved about the fried broccoli with Chinese sausage (think tempura heaven) and the duck laab salad, that arrived with heaps of juicy, ground duck meat.

We also loved the braised duck breast with massaman curry and roti (make sure to order more pancakes; you'll thank me) and the cauliflower steak, a hunk of fried cauliflower with an aromatic sauce.

I'm excited to return to Kin Shop. I recommend going with a few friends so you can maximize sharing and trying as many dishes as you can afford and comfortably fit in your stomach.
