Fiore's in Hoboken
Hoboken is awash with Italian delis, reminding me of my former days living in Boston's North End. After hearing rave reviews about Fiore's Saturday special of fresh mozzarella and roast beef, Will and I decided we needed to give it a try. We were warned there is a special way to order the sandwich. You can't just go up to the counter. You join the queue, which often wraps around the corner, select your bread by the doorway, and patiently wait to place your order for the special. And of course, it's cash only.
We ordered the special roast beef sandwich, and a prosciutto, roasted red peppers, and mozzarella sandwich. The two of them weighed as much as Marin, no joke. We patiently waited to get home and unwrapped the massive hunks of food. They both oozed with au jus, ribbons of freshly cut mozzarella, and olive oil-y goodness.
Once we figured out how to eat the behemoths (messily - just go for it), we immediately loved both. I liked the richness of the roast beef; tender tendrils of meat with the creamy cheese and salty au jus and I was quite partial to the sweetness of the roasted red peppers, garlicky emulsion, and salty prosciutto. These two sandwiches are certainly worth the wait. We can't wait to return!
As I write this, I realize there are plenty of other Hoboken delis to try. Please let me know what your favorite is.
